PhD, political scientist, is co-founder and managing director of Medienhaus Wien and honorary professor of Journalism at Miguel Hernández University. Kaltenbrunner worked as a political journalist and editor-in-chief for newspapers, magazines and new digital media (e.g. the political weekly “Profil”) since the early 1980s. He has developed several media-projects, print and online. Today is a media-advisor, researcher and lecturer.

He has lectured since the 1980 in several universities and academies in Europe and the USA, e.g. the universities of Vienna and Klagenfurt, the Poynter Institute, the Publizistik-Akademie Hamburg and many more.

He worked as the founding director of the executive MA-programme “International Media Innovation Management” (IMIM) and since 2011 collaborates as an honorary professor at the Universidad Miguel Hernández in Spain and as a visiting professor at the Summer University Strobl/Salzburg of the University of Vienna.

Kaltenbrunner initiated and led various educational and research projects in Austria, among them: the foundation of Viennas first academic journalism-programme “Journalismus und Medienmanagement” at the University of Applied Sciences (since 2003), the programme “Film-, TV und Medienproduktion” , the Viennese training center for media professionals “Forum Journalismus und Medien” (since 2011). There he also directs the year training programme for digital journalism.

He works in several research projects in European networks with a focus on Media Accountability, Media Policy, Newsroom Integration and Journalism Future and is publishing in academic books and scientific journals in German, English and Spanish. Since 2017 he is senior researcher, directing the project “Journalism in Transition” of the Institute for Comparative Media and Communication Studies (CMC) at the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
